Maghera Beach and Caves are one of those places that I enjoyed visiting with my friends. Even though we visited here during summer, it was not too crowded and we could enjoy the silence of the beach.
Exploring caves with all caution and being aware of tides was a mysterious and unique experience for me as the cave is a little bit colder than the beach and so quiet and nice. And walking in the water was phenomenal! At first, it doesn’t appear that the water is so deep, but as you cross it you’ll be surprised by its depth.

Maghera Beach And Caves Detailed Guide
Location
Maghera Beach and Caves are situated at the foot of high mountains in Donegal.
Maghera Cave is situated under Slievetooey Mountain, near Ardara village. Maghera Beach is located on the northern side of the Slieve League Peninsula with a short distance from Ardara village.
Parking
There is a car park available near the caves that gives you easy access to both beach and caves. At the time that I visited this attraction the price for parking was €3 and payable only in cash. However, the prices and policies might have changed.
Swimming at Maghera Beach
Swimming at Maghera Beach is not a safe activity due to its dangerous rip tides and strong currents. As it is not safe enough for you to enjoy, you can try other enjoyable activities, like walking barefoot, leisurely strolls, and exploring the caves at low tide. Or you can just simply relax on the beach as the atmosphere is so peaceful and unique.
Please note, that lifeguards are also not available at the beach, therefore, caution is the key!
How to Get to Maghera Beach
After parking your car you’ll have a grassy path and then a short uphill of sand and dunes to reach the beach. From the car park you’ll have a short walk around 200 meters to the beach and caves.
Safety Tips for Maghera Caves
It is necessary to check tide charts beforehand as the Caves are only accessible during low tides. Otherwise, you might get stuck in the cave and drown during high tides.

Places to Visit Near Maghera Beach and Caves
Assaranca Waterfall
Assaranca Waterfall is a beautiful natural wonder near Maghera Beach. Although it wasn’t a part of my itinerary to visit this place, in my way to Maghera Beach I found myself stopping here and exploring its beauty.
During summer it’s a popular activity for some families to come here and swim in its water. In winter, the water will be stronger because of rain and snow and it’s less crowded, perfect for immersing yourself in its unspoiled beauty.
Glengesh Pass
Glengesh Pass is just 10 kilometres from Maghera Beach and Caves. It’s a scenic pass that connects Ardara Town and Glencolumbkille with stunning views. Although it is not the main road for Ardara, some people choose this route for its breathtaking views for photography.
Gleniff Horseshoe
Gleniff Horseshoe is a scenic valley with fantastic hiking trails and captivating views, perfect for driving, cycling, and walking. It’s a mix of natural beauty, dramatic cliffs, and stunning landscapes.
