Nestled on the rugged coast of Northern Ireland, Giant’s Causeway is a natural marvel that captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty and fascinating history. I’ve had the chance to visit this iconic site twice, and each visit left me in awe.
The first time, I explored it as part of a Paddywagon tour on a memorable Monday, which also included stops at Belfast, Dunluce Castle, and the Dark Hedges.

History
Over 60 million years ago, intense volcanic activity created the iconic hexagonal basalt columns as lava cooled and cracked. This geological marvel is a stunning reminder of Earth’s power to shape breathtaking landscapes.

According to Irish folklore, the causeway was built by a giant named Finn MacCool. Finn who was a warrior from Irish mythology created the causeway to cross the sea and challenge his Scottish rival, Benandonner. As he goes, he realises that Benandonner is much larger and stronger than his anticipation.
To avoid defeat, Finn’s wife disguised him as a baby. When Benandonner saw the “baby,” he was terrified, imagining how enormous Finn must be if his child was so large. Panicked, Benandonner fled back to Scotland, tearing up the causeway behind him to ensure Finn couldn’t follow.
Through the ages, Giant’s Causeway has fascinated explorers, scientists, and storytellers alike.
