Fanad Head Lighthouse was built in 1817 and was designed by the famous architect and engineer George Halpin. Fanad Lighthouse was built in 1817 in response to the sinking of a Royal Navy warship, in 1811. Some years after the tragedy that resulted in the loss of over 250 lives, Fanad Lighthouse was built due to easier navigational aid and guidance for ships.

Over the years it went through different changes and now the lighthouse has become an iconic landmark that attracts a lot of people every year.

There is free parking available at Fanad Head Lighthouse next to the visitor centre which is very close to the lighthouse entrance.

For instance, from January-February opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Fanad Head Lighthouse offers you accommodation that is available all year round. There are three self-catering cottages available all with breathtaking views of the lighthouse and surroundings. These homes do not provide you with Wi-Fi or TV encouraging you to disconnect form the digital world and enjoy the quiet and silence of the place.

Although I did not have enough time to try their fantastic accommodation opportunity, I would love to try it whenever I visit here again. Here you can book your dreamy stay.

The most convenient way is to reach here by car. Your path from Letterkenny to Fanad Head Lighthouse will take around 47 min (42.1 km). As there is a free ample parking space, you shouldn’t be worry about parking your car.
